Unlocking Potential With Fabrication

It’s no secret that the construction industry has experienced many challenges in recent years, not least of which has been the COVID-19 pandemic. Volatility in the market has increased the cost and availability of materials and reduced labor capacity. As we experienced these market conditions, we realized we needed to be innovative to adapt and overcome these bottlenecks in the market to continue providing the best value to our clients and partners.

At JR Merit, we have and always will be committed to delivering highest quality services for our clients safely, reliably, cost effectively, and efficiently. Our latest endeavor to further our ability to do so is developing our own in-house fabrication shop.

Our new 26,000-SF fabrication shop will be a lean, efficient, and modern shop with automated technologies and skilled industry professionals with capacity to take on high-precision piping designs and fabrication.

The Benefits of In-House Fabrication

In-house fabrication capabilities will enable us to provide several benefits for projects and clients:

Efficiency: Our fabrication shop will be able to produce pipe, pipe supports, custom steel, and skid fabrications more efficiently and under our own control rather than relying on a third party serving the entire market. The software technology we are employing in our facility will streamline coordination from design to spool drawings to fabrication. Using automated machines will enable us to achieve higher production rates and better reliability than the traditional cutting and welding stations, which means we will have more capacity.

Quality: Our fabrication shop will also enable us to control quality more directly. By using software that integrates with the welding and cutting machines, we can document each component from the time it arrives as raw material until it is installed and tested on a project, enabling us to track its whole life cycle. And, this software will integrate directly with the welding and cutting machines performing the fabrication so there is a data record from each step in the process.

Reliability: As project schedules become more and more compressed, the need for reliable lead times and product shipments becomes even more critical. By controlling our own fabrication for the projects we are building, we can achieve better schedule reliability for our clients and be confident in that fact from day one.

Safety: Controlling our own fabrication gives our field crews the opportunity to provide direct input on how pipe spools are fabricated to improve safety and ease of installation. We will also be able to control how materials are loaded for transport, enabling us to ensure they can be safely unloaded at our project sites.

In the industry sectors where we work, fabricating our own piping will provide specific benefits that support our clients:

Manufacturing Plants: Having a fabrication shop will enable us to streamline preconstruction, minimize supplier coordination, and control the schedule, which is particularly valuable for manufacturing plant projects to streamline construction schedules and maintain plant production as a top goal for clients in this sector.

Food and Beverage Processing Plants: Food and beverage facility projects are often fast-paced or rapid response. Having a fabrication shop will enable us to respond even more effectively to quick projects and perform emergency repairs to minimize downtime.

High Tech: In high-tech environments, where many projects are design-build or progressive design-build, having our own facility will allow us to adapt and adjust to evolving design throughout the project. From a confidentiality standpoint, we can perform more work in-house, which will help limit the amount of project information that has to be distributed outside our organization.

Planning for Growth

Our fabrication facility’s initial capacity will be based on our current needs, however we’re already looking to the future. Our facility design will support expansion to up to five times our initial output! Additionally, we have designated bays for pre-fabrication and modular construction elements to allow for even more streamlined project installations.

We are always looking for innovative ways to deliver the safest and highest value solutions for our clients. We’re thrilled to start offering the benefits of in-house fabrication to our partners and clients.
