Introducing JR Merit’s Fab Shop: Precision Fabrication for Critical Processes

Growth and continuous improvement have been two key themes for JR Merit over the last couple of years—we’ve been growing our team, improving our internal tools and processes, engaging in strategic planning to build for the future, and looking critically at all the ways that we can deliver high quality and best value experiences for both our clients and their projects, and our team and their careers.

One of the biggest highlights has been the completion of our 26,000 SF fab shop. From project kickoff in 2021 to running our first projects through the shop in late 2022, we’re getting ready to host an open house and show off this major achievement in our continued growth as a company. Check out some of our shop’s features that are already creating value for our clients!

Real-Time Progress Tracking and Forecasting

Fabrication is as much a team-oriented process as being in the field, and our team communicates and supports each other to maintain efficient workflows, high quality, and above all else safety at all times. We make sure that everyone fully understands the scope and challenges of each project and we all have a plan for overcoming challenges that arise.

We document each step in the fabrication process, from the time raw material arrives until fabricated components are installed and tested in the field. We have integrated our fabrication processes with our production tracking software by tracking each stage of fabrication. We verify quality and pinpoint progress at every stage in the process; this enables us to track and monitor our current and forecasted workflows, and we can tell a client exactly where their project is at any moment.

Optimizing Production and Minimizing Waste with Automation

Automation enables us to achieve more efficient production rates and better reliability than the traditional cutting and welding operations, which translates to more production capacity. Our cut and prep station includes automation features that support precision cuts and waste reduction. Once we’ve developed cut lists to turn piping material into project-specific components, our CNC operating cutting machine automatically feeds materials through the saw to the specified length, increasing precision over manual measurements. The cutter optimizes cut sequencing to minimize materials waste, which can create significant cost savings both in materials and by reducing time spent by shop personnel in prep. Our semi-automated welding machines perform highly precise welds. Hand welds at this level require the services of a seasoned welder, who are hard to come by. Training our highly skilled personnel to use the semi-automated technology enables more team members to support welding operations at a high level of performance, increasing our production capacity, efficiency, and quality. We’ve laid out our weld stations to support safety and agility, with tracks that self-align materials to the welder, minimizing materials handling, and positioners that feature rapid adjustability, which speeds up the welding process and reduces the challenges of moving large pipe sections into position. We’ve been able to cut our weld setup time in half!

Looking Ahead to Support Efficiency in the Field

We create custom shipping kits for every project and client. We work with our field team partners to understand their flow of work once materials arrive and are readied for installation, then kit and package materials accordingly to support efficient operations and safety in the field. This careful and considered approach sets our work apart from many other fabrication shops.

And we’re already looking for ways in which we can continuously improve. For example, our team has devised a plan for creating new custom shipping carts that will improve jobsite efficiency. Our goal is for carts to be organized according to installation flows, packed so that they can easily be rolled into a building or picked by a forklift or crane at the site. From when we first envisioned having our own shop, it was always about improving quality, efficiency, reliability, and safety. We’re thrilled to see results that are already achieving these goals, and we’re so excited to keep bringing this value to our clients. Let’s Go!!

Come check out our shop when you’re in the neighborhood, we’d love to show you around!
