Location: Apache Junction, AZ
Owner/Client: Salt River Project
This project consisted of removal and replacement of the existing TSV valves and adjacent penstock sections upstream and downstream of each unit. Three 96-inch diameter butterfly valves with actuators, counterweights, and control panels were replaced, including flange gaskets and fasteners. Each valve and penstock required an independent bypass system. A new mezzanine was fabricated and installed to provide permanent access to the new valves.
Access to the work was a challenge. The access point was located at the downstream base of the dam and accessible only by water. A modular barge transportation system was developed to transfer material between the river access point nine miles downstream and the access tunnel at the base of the dam.
